About

Mercia Armstrong

Mercia Armstrong, MSW BEd (Prim & EarlChildEd), is a compassionate Social Worker, Associate Play Therapist, and founder of Curious Box Therapy, with over 20 years of experience in Early Childhood Education and a strong background in trauma-informed, child-centred therapeutic care. Mercia’s journey began with a Bachelor’s in Education, where she developed a deep understanding of childhood development. Her passion for supporting children through their emotional journeys led her to pursue a Master’s in Social Work, where she became a proud member of the Australian Association of Social Workers (AASW).

Mercia’s expertise spans both education and social work, enhanced by her specialised training at the Queensland Institute of Play Therapy. As an Associate Play Therapist with the Australian Play Therapy Association, she integrates her knowledge of childhood development, therapeutic techniques, and her own lived experiences as a mother into her practice. Her dedication to ethical, neuro-affirming, and trauma-informed care ensures that every child is met with the respect and understanding they deserve.

At Curious Box Therapy, Mercia creates a nurturing space where children can explore their emotions and experiences through the power of play. Curious Box reflects Mercia’s commitment to providing a secure, imaginative environment where curiosity drives discovery and healing. Her playroom is filled with miniatures, natural objects, and other creative tools that encourage self-expression, allowing children to engage in meaningful therapeutic work at their own pace.

Born in South Africa and now raising four daughters with her husband, Mercia’s life experiences across two cultures enrich her understanding of the diverse needs of families. She has a unique ability to connect deeply with both children and their caregivers, offering not only play therapy but also practical parenting support. This holistic, family-centred approach is key to the healing process, fostering stronger bonds and helping families thrive together.

Outside her practice, Mercia enjoys raising Heritage Chickens and spending weekends with her family exploring local farms, embracing the joys of nature and fresh produce. Her love for children, family, and the outdoors blends into her therapeutic approach, helping to create a warm, grounded atmosphere where children feel safe to grow and heal.

With a focus on empathy, respect, and trust, Curious Box Therapy is dedicated to empowering children to navigate their emotions, build resilience, and unlock their full potential. Mercia’s commitment to collaboration with parents and other professionals ensures that the positive impact of therapy extends far beyond the playroom, making a lasting difference in the lives of the children and families she serves.

Emily Rein

Emily Rein (MCouns, BPsych) is a warm and empathetic children’s counsellor with a Master of Counselling and a background in psychology. She brings a trauma-informed, neurodiversity-affirming approach, grounded in years of experience supporting children and families with complex needs. Emily has specialised training in Child-Centred Play Therapy and is a proud member of the Psychotherapy and Counselling Federation of Australia.

Based in the Brisbane and Logan area, Emily has spent her career working alongside local families. She uses play therapy, an evidence-based approach, combined with a deep understanding of child development to support the children she works with.

Emily recognises play as a child’s natural way of communicating, allowing them to explore and express big emotions without fear of judgment. Through play, children develop problem-solving, social, and coping skills, build confidence and self-esteem, and heal from difficult or traumatic experiences.

Her playroom offers a variety of thoughtfully chosen toys and materials, miniature figures, puppets, and dollhouses to explore relationships; art supplies for creative expression; sand trays for storytelling; and sensory items to support regulation. Games, blocks, and imaginative props encourage problem-solving and cooperation, creating a safe, engaging space for children to express their feelings and experiences.

Emily’s approach is gentle, playful, and creative, helping children feel empowered, understood, and supported. She works closely with parents, offering practical strategies tailored to each family’s needs, and collaborates with other professionals to provide wrap-around support.

As a mum of two, Emily understands both the professional and personal sides of parenting challenges. She believes in finding joy in everyday life, whether it’s hiking in the mountains, scooter rides at the park with her kids, or getting lost in a great crime novel. Having witnessed the transformative power of play, Emily is dedicated to walking alongside families every step of the way, helping children heal, grow, and thrive.
